Welcome to the Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports. 4-H Shooting Sports is offered in every state through its' land grant university. Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports joined the national program in 2009, and has grown exponentially. Illinois offers training in archery, rifle (air and small-bore), shotgun, pistol, and outdoor hunting skills. The Winnebago County local program offers the disciplines of .22 rifle, .22 pistol, and shotgun. Pine Tree Pistol Club is proud to host 4-H shooting sports at our club. Some dates are 4-H only and others are open to anyone. For the 4-H only dates, you must contact 4-H directly using the link at the bottom of this page. Check our calendar for upcoming dates.

The focus of all 4-H programs is the development of youth as individuals and as responsible, productive citizens. The Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports program stands out as an example. Youth learn marksmanship, the safe and responsible use of firearms, the principles of shooting, hunting, competition, and much more. The activities of the program and support of adult leaders provide young people with opportunities to develop life skills, self-worth and conservation ethics.

Each young person interested in shooting sports must enroll in a local 4-H shooting sports club, which in Winnebago County is Winnebago Shooting Sports 4-H Club.

All 4-H clubs put the development of the young person first, so 4-H shooting sports clubs are designed to make every member feel welcome and safe at the meetings. 4-H encourages members to take leadership roles in their club and mentor younger youth. 4-H members are inspired to give back to their communities in many ways.

The majority of a shooting sports club meeting is spent learning the shooting sports discipline they are enrolled. Here are some of the topics covered:

  • Practice safety techniques and response to range commands.
  • Learn basic shooting fundamentals.
  • Clean and maintain firearms and equipment.
  • Learn about eye and ear protection.
  • Learn the ethics about responsible gun usage.
  • Take field trips.
  • Develop shooting skills.
  • Explore wildlife conservation.
  • Enter competitions
